Traditional Smashed Avocado Toast
So where did the smashed avocado toast craze begin? Cafe Gitane, in New York City, claims it started the phenomenon with an avocado, lemon juice, olive oil, and chili flake spread served atop seven-grain toast. Nevertheless, cafes in Australia served avocado smashed toast – or what they lovingly refer to as “nature’s butter” – long before New York.

    Seven Grain Breadtoasted

  • 1tsp

    Lemon Juice

  • 1tsp

    Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

  • 1tbsp

    Feta Cheese

  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakesto taste

  • Sea Saltchunks, to taste
  1. Using a fork, lightly mash avocado in a bowl.
  2. Add lemon juice, olive oil, and sea salt. Mix well.
  3. Spread avocado mixture on toasted seven grain bread.
  4. Top with crumbled feta, and garnish with a pinch of chili flakes.
